I’ve been drinking a lot of Pumpkin Beers over the last month or so before I had a chance to get my hands on this one. This is usually top of my list for Pumpkin Beers but I wasn’t sure if it would beat out this years competition. I was wrong. So, so wrong.
Cigar City’s Good Gourd is amazing, if you drink it straight from the fridge it’s like drinking a pumpkin pie. If you let it get up to room temperature all those extra flavors go away and you get a very solid Pumpkin Ale. I can say for sure this went right back up to the top of my Pumpkin list and I heard that this gets even better with a year of cellaring on it.
Legend has it that when a pumpkin comes into the world it is possessed by either a good or an evil spirit. Ours got all the good baby! Bursting with real pumpkin flavor and yummy pumpkin spices including Ceylon cinnamon, Jamaican all-spice, Zanzibar cloves and nutmeg, Good Gourd is a celebration of Fall and that spookiest of holidays, Halloween. Pair Good Gourd with pumpkin soup, pumpkin pie and costume parties.
Cigar City Good Gourd Imperial Pumpkin Ale Review
Appearance: Pour orange in color with a cream/white head.
Smell: Immediately you get the cinnamon and other spices followed up by pumpkin notes.
Taste: True depth to the flavors, like eating a pumpkin pie. Spices and butter/cream notes up front and solid pumpkin ale at the end.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied and full of flavor when cold.
Overall: Maybe it’s been a while since I’ve had one of these but I was surprised at all the flavors they managed to get out of this beer. Definitely not your typical Pumpkin Ale.
